LoL Season 3 Ranked Changes 2026: Aegis, Duo Queue & More

League of Legends Season 3 brought several important changes to Ranked in 2026.

The new season started on July 29, and Riot used the update to change how Aegis of Valor works, bring duo queue back to Master, and adjust the competitive environment at the highest ranks.

These changes matter if you're currently climbing, playing with a duo partner, or trying to understand why your ranked games feel different this season.

In this guide, we'll break down the biggest LoL Season 3 ranked changes and explain what they mean for normal players.

When Did LoL Season 3 Ranked Start?

League of Legends Ranked Season 3 started on July 29, 2026 at 12:00 PM local server time.

The Victorious Ranked mission was also refreshed with the new season.

Riot distributed the Season 2 rewards shortly after the start of Season 3.

This means the current ranked environment is now fully part of Season 3 rather than the previous split.

The Biggest LoL Season 3 Ranked Changes

    The most important changes include:

    • Aegis of Valor was redesigned
    • Aegis now focuses entirely on winning
    • Master duo queue returned
    • Grandmaster and Challenger remain restricted
    • Duo partners at Master must be close in rank
    • Riot continues to adjust matchmaking quality
    • Ranked systems are being monitored for competitive integrity

The changes are especially noticeable for players around Master and above, but the Aegis changes can also affect lower-ranked players who are autofilled.

Aegis of Valor Changed in Season 3

Aegis of Valor was introduced to make autofilled games feel more worthwhile.

Originally, the system could provide protection from LP loss after a defeat or additional LP after a win, depending on the circumstances and performance requirements.

Riot decided that this created an unwanted incentive.

Players could potentially focus too much on achieving a certain personal grade instead of simply trying to win the game.

For Season 3, Riot changed the system.

Aegis of Valor is now focused entirely on victory.

    What Happens With Aegis Now?

When Aegis of Valor applies to an eligible game:

    Win: Receive double LP.

Loss: Aegis no longer protects you from LP loss.

The Mastery-grade requirement was also removed for the Aegis reward.

This gives players one simple objective:

    Win the game.

Riot specifically said the goal was to remove conflicting incentives and make sure everyone in a Ranked game is working toward the same outcome.

Does Aegis of Valor Still Protect LP?

    No.

This is one of the biggest differences from the original system.

Under the Season 3 version of Aegis, losing an eligible game does not give you LP-loss protection.

Instead, the reward is tied to winning.

If you win an eligible game, you can receive double LP.

That makes Aegis much easier to understand.

You're no longer trying to play for a particular grade just to protect your LP.

    You're simply trying to win.

    Master Duo Queue Is Back

One of the most interesting Season 3 changes is the return of duo queue at Master.

Riot previously restricted duoing at the highest levels because of concerns around matchmaking quality and competitive integrity.

For Season 3, Master players can once again duo.

    However, there are important restrictions.

Who Can Master Players Duo With?

Master players can duo with players who are relatively close to them in rank.

The system is designed to prevent large rank gaps from creating unfair competitive advantages.

This means being Master does not mean you can simply invite any player from a much lower rank and queue together.

    The restrictions remain intentionally tight.

Can Grandmaster Duo in Season 3?

    No.

Grandmaster remains restricted from normal Apex duo queue under the Season 3 rules.

Riot explained that the player population becomes much smaller at Grandmaster and Challenger, which makes duoing more influential on match quality.

At these ranks, a duo can have a much larger effect on the outcome of a game.

Can Challenger Duo in Season 3?

    Challenger remains restricted as well.

The reason is similar to Grandmaster.

The higher the rank, the smaller the available player pool becomes.

That makes it more difficult for matchmaking to create fair games when premade groups have significant differences in skill or coordination.

Riot wants to preserve the competitive integrity of the highest part of the ladder.

Why Did Riot Bring Master Duo Queue Back?

The decision is a compromise between competitive integrity and social gameplay.

Playing League at a high rank can become increasingly isolated when players cannot queue with friends.

Master has a larger player population than Grandmaster and Challenger, so Riot believes duo queue can be supported there with tighter restrictions.

The goal is to allow more players to play competitively with friends without creating the same matchmaking problems seen at the very top of the ladder.

What Does This Mean for Master Players?

If you're Master, Season 3 gives you more flexibility.

You can once again queue with another player who meets the relevant rank restrictions.

This can make climbing more enjoyable if you have a regular duo partner.

However, duo queue doesn't automatically make climbing easier.

You still need to win games consistently.

A duo can improve communication and coordination, but your opponents can also have their own premade players.

Does Duo Queue Make Climbing Easier?

    Not necessarily.

Duo queue gives you some advantages:

    • Better communication
    • More reliable coordination
    • Easier setup for plays
    • Better understanding of your partner's champion pool
    • More consistent strategies

    But it also changes matchmaking.

You may face another duo, and your opponents can coordinate just as effectively.

The biggest advantage comes from playing with someone whose playstyle complements yours.

For example, a Jungle + Mid duo can coordinate ganks and objective control more easily.

A Bot + Support duo can communicate lane pressure and engage timings more effectively.

    Autofill Changes Still Matter

Ranked changes introduced earlier in 2026 continue to affect how autofill works.

Riot's goal has been to make autofilled games more balanced.

The matchmaking system attempts to match autofilled players against other autofilled players in the same role when possible.

If that isn't possible, the system tries to keep the number of autofilled players balanced between the teams.

This is especially relevant for players who frequently get filled into Jungle or another less-preferred position.

What Happens If You Get Autofilled?

Being autofilled doesn't automatically mean your game is doomed.

The current system is designed to make these games more balanced than before.

If you're autofilled, the best approach is to adapt rather than immediately assume the game is unfair.

    Play a champion you understand.

    Communicate with your team.

    Focus on the basics.

And remember that Aegis of Valor may apply to eligible autofilled games.

Does Aegis Give Double LP Every Game?

    No.

Aegis of Valor only applies when the system identifies an eligible situation.

You won't simply receive double LP for every ranked victory.

If Aegis is active in your game, the client should indicate that the system is in effect.

The important part is that the reward is now tied directly to winning.

What About MMR in Season 3?

MMR continues to be an important part of League's ranked matchmaking.

Your visible rank and your matchmaking rating are not exactly the same thing.

This is why two players with the same visible rank can sometimes experience different LP gains and losses.

Riot has continued working on MMR distribution and matchmaking throughout 2026.

If you want a deeper explanation of the system, read our LoL MMR Explained guide.

Why Can Two Players at the Same Rank Have Different LP Gains?

Your visible rank does not tell the entire story.

Matchmaking rating influences the opponents you face and can influence how your LP progression behaves.

For example, a player whose MMR is significantly higher than their visible rank may receive stronger LP gains while climbing.

This is one reason you shouldn't judge your progress purely by comparing your LP gains with a friend's.

What Should You Focus on During Season 3?

The ranked changes are important, but the fundamentals of climbing haven't disappeared.

You still need to focus on:

    • Champion consistency
    • Farming
    • Objective control
    • Vision
    • Map awareness
    • Team fights
    • Wave management
    • Playing around your strongest win condition

If you're already comfortable with the ranked system, the biggest improvement will usually come from improving your gameplay rather than constantly checking your LP.

How to Use Duo Queue Correctly

If you're eligible for duo queue, choose your partner carefully.

The best duo isn't necessarily your highest-ranked friend.

    Look for someone who:

    • Communicates clearly
    • Doesn't tilt easily
    • Understands your playstyle
    • Plays a complementary role
    • Doesn't force unnecessary fights
    • Understands when to play for objectives

A reliable duo partner can be more valuable than a mechanically stronger player who constantly makes poor decisions.

    Best Duo Combinations for Climbing

Some role combinations naturally provide strong coordination.

    Jungle + Mid

This combination can create pressure across the entire map.

    The two players can coordinate:

    • Ganks
    • Invades
    • River control
    • Objectives
    • Roams

    ADC + Support

Bot lane duos can communicate every trade and engage.

This is particularly useful when both players understand their champion matchups.

    Jungle + Support

This combination can create strong mid-game map pressure.

The duo can move together to secure vision, invade, gank lanes, and prepare objectives.

What Season 3 Means for Solo Players

If you don't play duo queue, most of the changes don't fundamentally change your climb.

Your main focus should remain the same:

Play consistently and improve your decision-making.

Don't feel pressured to find a duo simply because Master players can now queue together.

    Solo players can still climb.

In fact, being comfortable playing independently is an important skill because you won't always have a coordinated teammate.

    Season 3 Ranked Rewards

Season 3 also refreshes the ranked progression cycle.

The Victorious Ranked mission was reset when the season began, requiring 15 ranked wins for the mission.

This gives players another opportunity to work toward the season's ranked rewards.

If you're grinding toward your target rank, it's worth tracking both your rank progression and your ranked reward progress.

Is Season 3 Good for Ranked?

Overall, the changes are aimed at making Ranked more competitive and less frustrating.

The Aegis change simplifies the incentive.

Instead of worrying about achieving a particular grade, the goal is straightforward:

    Win.

The return of Master duo queue also gives high-ranked players more opportunities to play with friends while keeping stricter restrictions at Grandmaster and Challenger.

Meanwhile, Riot continues to work on matchmaking, autofill, MMR distribution, and competitive integrity.

How to Climb Faster in Season 3

The best approach hasn't changed dramatically.

    Pick a small champion pool.

Play one or two roles consistently.

    Avoid unnecessary deaths.

    Track objectives.

    Improve your farming.

    Learn from losses.

And don't constantly switch champions because you lost two games.

If you're already following those fundamentals, you can start focusing on more advanced improvements such as wave management and matchup-specific decisions.

Should You Duo or Solo Queue in Season 3?

    There isn't a universal answer.

    Solo Queue

    Better if you:

    • Prefer complete independence
    • Want to focus on your own gameplay
    • Don't have a reliable duo
    • Prefer playing around your own decisions

    Duo Queue

    Better if you:

    • Have a reliable teammate
    • Communicate well
    • Play complementary roles
    • Want more coordination
    • Enjoy playing competitively with a friend

    The important thing is consistency.

    A good duo can help.

A bad duo can make climbing harder.

    Season 3 and Rank Boosting

The ranked changes also matter if you're considering professional assistance with your climb.

RankForge offers LoL Boosting for players who want help reaching a specific ranked goal.

If you're considering a boost, it's worth understanding how your current MMR, rank, desired destination, and preferred queue type affect the order.

    Final Thoughts

League of Legends Season 3 brought several meaningful changes to Ranked.

    The biggest ones are:

    • Aegis of Valor now rewards wins rather than protecting losses
    • Master duo queue has returned
    • Master duo partners must remain within the relevant rank restrictions
    • Grandmaster and Challenger remain restricted
    • Riot continues improving autofill and matchmaking
    • MMR remains an important part of the ranked experience

For most players, the biggest lesson is simple:

Don't let the ranked system become your entire focus.

The changes can affect how your games work, but your ability to climb still comes down to consistent gameplay.

Choose a small champion pool, improve your fundamentals, learn from your mistakes, and play around the win condition of each game.
